Gran Turismo, listed on Netflix as Gran Turismo: Based on a True Story, turns an unusual real-life opportunity into an accessible sports drama. Jann Mardenborough is a skilled simulator racer whose understanding of tracks, braking points and racing lines earns him a place in GT Academy, a competition designed to find a gamer capable of becoming a professional driver.For gamers, that starting point is immediately appealing. The film treats time spent learning a racing game as genuine practice, but it does not suggest that virtual skill is enough by itself. Jann must develop physical endurance, adjust to real danger and prove himself to people who doubt the programme. That movement from a bedroom simulator to professional circuits gives the story its inspiring quality.Archie Madekwe keeps Jann focused and believable, while David Harbour brings rough-edged warmth as trainer Jack Salter. Neill Blomkamp uses digital overlays, shifting viewpoints and forceful racing sound to connect the language of the game with the speed and pressure of a real track. The racing sequences are energetic and easy to follow even if you have never played Gran Turismo.The film rearranges parts of Mardenborough’s history for dramatic effect, including the position of his 2015 Nürburgring accident in relation to his Le Mans achievement. It should therefore be enjoyed as a dramatised sports story rather than a precise biography. The editor liked its storyline and found it inspiring, with particular appeal for gamers. At 135 minutes, it needs a full evening, but its clear underdog journey and exciting racing make that commitment worthwhile.
